Kinds of Adverb


          In this chapter, we shall study adverbs of time, place, manner, degree and frequency.


          Adverbs of Time

          Read the following sentences.

            1.   I often see her walking in the park.

            2.   I always get up early.

            3.   The train from Delhi to Kanpur is always late.

            4.   What day is it today?

          An adverb of time indicates the time of the action stated by its verb.


          Some more adverbs of time are then, daily, today, tonight, shortly, recently, lately,
          ago, always, and never.


          Adverbs of Place


          Read the following sentences.

            1.  Nimmi, please keep the shopping bag there.

            2.  Sit here till she comes.

            3.  We put away our cricket bats.
            4.  Who is sitting inside?


          An adverb of place points to the place of the action stated by the verb.

          Some more adverbs of place are onwards, forwards, sidewards, homewards, above,

          somewhere, nowhere, anywhere, everywhere, up, down, away, back, and below.


          Adverbs of Manner

          Read the following sentences.

            1.  Deepa spoke softly.

            2.  Parikh worked quickly.

            3.  The man shouted loudly.

          An adverb of manner points to the manner of the action expressed by the verb.


          Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding ‘ly’ to an adjective.
