Was/Were


                Singular Subject + Singular Verb                     Plural Subject + Plural Verb

              I was your friend.                               We were your friends.


              He was our neighbour.                            Amit and Charu were our neighbours.

              The dog was barking.                             The dogs were barking.


          Has/Have


                Singular Subject + Singular Verb                     Plural Subject + Plural Verb

              She has two red shirts.                          They have two red shirts.


              He has a new washing machine.                    They have a new washing machine.


          We always use have with singular pronouns I and you.

            1.  I have a blue bag.                               2.  You have a cow.

          Some More Uses of Verbs with Subjects


          We use the root form of a verb + -s or -es with singular subjects.

          Read the following sentences.

            1.  Mrs Pandey teaches us science.                   2.  She plays hockey.


          In the given sentences, the words teaches and plays are singular verbs, so they are
          used with singular subjects.

          We use only the root form of a verb with plural subjects.


          Read the following sentences.

            1.  We buy a bicycle.                                2.  They play cricket.
            3.  Mrs Joshi and Mrs Pandey teach us science.


          In the above sentences, the words buy, play and teach are plural verbs, so they are
          used with plural subjects.


          The word I is a singular pronoun, but we always use the root form of a verb with I.
            1.  I take a bath.                                   2.   I sing a song.

            3.   I write a letter.
