9 Symmetry

RECALL
● Symmetry is the phenomenon when a figure is folded into two halves such that both the halves are identical.
● The line which divides the figure into two identical halves is called the line of symmetry or axis of symmetry.
● The relationship between two symmetrical parts is the same as that between an object and its mirror image.
Introduction
Symmetry is a fundamental part of geometry, nature and shapes. It creates patterns that help us visualize our world
conceptually. Just take a look around you and you will see an idea of symmetry in leaves, flowers, clothes, rangoli
designs, company logos, etc. Few examples are that of Artists, Architects and craft people.
In each of the above pictures, if these are folded along the line, one half of the picture would exactly overlap the
other. It looks like mirror image and this kind of symmetry is called reflection symmetry. Figures with reflection
symmetry have a mirror line.
