14 Time and Calendar
Warm Up
● We use a clock or a watch to know the time.
● The dial of the clock is divided into 12 big divisions marked as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
and 12.
● The gap between two consecutive numbers is divided into fi ve equal divisions.There are

60 small divisions in the clock.
● There are two hands on a clock, the long hand is called the minute hand and the short
hand is called the hour hand.
● The minute hand completes one round of the clock in one hour and the hour hand
completes one round of the clock in 12 hours.
Reading the Time
The minute hand of the clock moves from one small division to the next small division
in 1 minute. It goes round the dial in 1 hour. Thus, the minute hand covers 60 small
divisions in 1 hour.
If you observe the clock carefully, you will notice the following things:
● The minute hand moves from one big Dial Minute hand
division to another in 5 minutes. 11 12 1
● The hour hand moves from one 10 2 Hour hand

● The hour hand takes 12 hours to Small Division 7 6 5
complete one round of the clock.
● The hour hand takes 2 rounds of the clock in a day.
