Expanded Form
When we write a number in terms of sum of the place values of its digits, it is called the
expanded form of that number.
For example, 2617 is made up of 2 thousands, 6 hundreds, 1 ten and 7 ones.
Thus, the expanded form of 2617 is :
2617 = 2 thousands + 6 hundreds + 1 ten + 7 ones or
2617 = 2000 + 600 + 10 + 7
If we reverse this process, we can get the standard form (short form) of the numbers.
Thus, the short form of 2000 + 600 + 10 + 7 = 2617.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Write the following numbers in expanded form.
(a) 3752 (b) 6083
Solution: (a) Expanded form of 3752 = 3000 + 700 + 50 + 2
(b) Expanded form of 6083 = 6000 + 0 + 80 + 3
