Different Ways of Expressing Numbers
Numbers can be expressed in several ways. We can write the numbers in words, in numerals
and in expanded notations. Expanded notation means expressing a number as the sum of the
place values of its digits.
Standard form 75638
Expanded form 70000 + 5000 + 600 + 30 + 8
Expanded form in words 7 ten thousands + 5 thousands + 6 hundreds + 3 tens + 8 ones

Example: Write the number 6,59,82,937 in its expanded form.
Solution: The expanded notation for the number 6,59,82,937 is
6,00,00,000 + 50,00,000 + 9,00,000 + 80,000 + 2,000 + 900 + 30 + 7

Successor and Predecessor
Successor
A number which comes just after the given number in order is called the successor of that
number. Successor of a number is obtained by adding 1 to the given number.
For example, we find the successor of 72, 897 is follows: 72,897 + 1 = 72,898
Thus, successor of 72,897 is 72, 898
Predecessor
A number which comes just before the given number in order is called the predecessor of that
number. Predecessor of a number is obtained by subtracting 1 from the given number.
For example, we find the predecessor of 6,56,23,261 as follows:
6,56,23,261 – 1 = 6,56,23,260
