Thus, the fractions in which the denominators are 10, 100, 1000, etc. are known as decimal
fractions. Decimal fractions have two parts: a whole part and a fractional part. Both parts are
separated by a point or dot (.). Whole part is to the left of the dot and fractional part is to the
right of the dot.
For example, in 0.23 Fact-o-meter
In a decimal number, the decimal point
Whole part 0 . 23 Fractional part separates the whole number part from the
fractional part. A zero or space before the
Decimal point shows that the number has no whole
number part.
Writing Tenth as Decimal
Take a strip of 10 units and colour one part of it as shown here:
The coloured part represents 1 or one-tenth.
10
We write in it decimal form as ‘0.1’.
We read it as ‘zero point one’.
Similarly, take a strip of 10 units and colour 7 parts of it.
The coloured part represents 7 or seven-tenths.
10
We write it in decimal form as ‘0.7’. We read it as ‘zero point seven’.
Writing Hundredth as Decimal
Let us take a board or sheet of 100 equal parts as shown:
Colour 1 part red, 3 parts blue and 23 parts green.
Now, the coloured red part represents 1 or one-hundredth.
100
We write it in decimal form as ‘0.01’.
We read it as ‘zero point zero one’.
Similarly, blue part represents 3 or three-hundredths.
100
We write it in decimal form as ‘0.03’.
We read it as ‘zero point zero three’.
Green part represents 23 or twenty three-hundredths.
100
We write it in decimal form as ‘0.23’. Absorbing Facts
0.523 is read as:
We read it as ‘zero point two three’. Zero point five hundred twenty-three 7
Zero point five two three 3
