Shutting Down Windows
If you are going to stop working on the computer system, it is highly recommended that you should safely shut
down your computer system, so that all your opened fi les in the main memory can be closed properly and the
changes which you have made in the settings related to Windows remain intact. Even if you do not want to
shut down your system as you are walking away from your computer for few minutes, you can safeguard your
information from unauthorized access and save power in many other ways. You can lock your computer or
switch it to a low power state that saves energy. When locked, your computer can still function, but your fi les,
settings and programs are not accessible and cannot be viewed by others. All these options are available from
the Shut down button located in the lower right corner of the Start menu.
Step 1: Click on the Start button to open the Start menu.
Step 2: Click on Power option.
Step 3: Choose an option from the popup menu.
• Restart: To shut down the system and restart it.
• Sleep: To conserves power and protect your work by turning
your computer into sleep mode. You can retrieve your work by
moving the mouse pointer or by pressing the Enter key on the
keyboard.
• Shut Down: To close all the programs and turn off the computer
safely.
Press Alt + F4 to get the Shut down Windows
message box and select Shut down.
Operating System
Operating system is an integral part of a computer system as it controls the working of entire computer system
and acts as an interface between the user and computer. The computer does not understand the user’s data and
instructions. It is the operating system software which translates them into the machine executable form and get
the user’s work done by the hardware. Operating system is also known as the manager of computer system as it
manages computer’s memory, controls the working of all hardware and software components, and helps CPU
in processing and calculating.

Windows
Windows is one of the most popular operating system used all over the world. The graphical
user interface, combined with the ease of operating and features such as multi-tasking, plug
and play support for devices, makes it one of the easiest operating systems to learn and use.
Mac OS
Mac OS is an operating system developed by Apple Inc. for their Mac series of computers. It
provides a graphical user interface that lets users interact with icons on the screen to perform
tasks. It is generally considered a more robust operating system than Windows.
Linux
Linux is also a GUI operating system that has been developed from the old UNIX
operating system. It is an open source software that lets users modify and redistribute
the software for free.
