v Menu bar: It appears below the Title Bar. It shows the menu items such as File, Edit, View, Insert, Format,
Styles, Table, Form, Tools, Window and Help.
v Rulers: Writer has a horizontal and a vertical ruler present across the top and left side of the document
respectively, which tells the width and height of the page. It also shows the margins, indents and tab
positions.
v Document Area: This is the largest area in Writer window where the text is entered for processing
v Scroll Bars: The two scroll bars in the window help to navigate in a large sized document. Horizontal scroll
bar is helpful while moving from left to right and Vertical scroll bar to move up and down.
v Status bar: This bar is located at the bottom and displays the document information like current page
number, template in use, zoom percentage, overtype mode, selection mode, etc.
v Standard toolbar: It contains commands in the form of icons which represent commands such as New,
Open, Save, and Print.
v Formatting toolbar: It contains the various options for formatting a document. A graphical representation
of commands is shown in the form of icons.
v Sidebar: The Sidebar, located at right edge of Writer window, gives access to frequently used properties.
Creating a New Document

Writer opens a blank document (Untitled) by default, when you start the application, Which bar shows the
which can be used for creating a new document. While working in Writer, if you want to margins, indents or

Step 1. Click on File menu.
Step 2. Select New option.
Step 3. Select Text Document option. A new Writer window will open.
You can directly start typing your document as the text will start inserting from the insertion point, also called
cursor.
