Rule 2: Learn the Typing Zones: Each fi nger should strike a particular key on the keyboard. Every Home key
has both a key above and a key underneath.
For example, Home key A has the key Q above it and Z underneath which can be pressed with the left
little fi nger. Similarly, the key S has W above it and X underneath which can be pressed with left ring
fi nger. The keys which are near to the index fi nger can be pressed using the closest index fi nger, like
left index fi nger can be used to press T, G and B while right index fi nger can be used to press Y, H and
                     N keys.

To press the Spacebar, use any of your thumb as per your convenience. Use your left hand little fi nger
to press special keys like Shift, Caps lock, Tab etc. on the left side and right little fi nger for pressing
Enter key and other symbol keys present on the right side.
Rule 3: Practice the Lessons: Now, start the typing practice. Intially, keep your eyes on the keyboard and
always press the keys with the right fi nger according to the typing zone. Return your hands back to the
Home position after each key press. Do not type blindly, but do it by looking at the keyboard.
After sometime, your hands will learn the key positions automatically and you will stop looking at the
keyboard, but how long does it takes, it depends on your practice.

Proper Sitting Posture for typing (Typing Ergonomics)
Proper sitting posture while typing on the keyboard is very important to prevent physical fatigue and the injuries
that result from the repetitive movement. It helps not only to work comfortably but also increases the typing
speed by achieving a more effi cient positioning for typing movements.
            The guidelines include:

v The chair you are using should be adjustable so that you can set the height to rest your feet fl at on the fl oor.
v Your keyboard should be at a height such that it allow your elbows to be bent about 90° and close to your
                 side.

v The monitor height should be adjusted such that the top of screen is slightly below the eye level.
v The monitor should be at a distance of atleast 20 inches to avoid the eye strains.
v The elbow and the wrists to remain straight while typing.
v Keep your elbows close to your body as it helps to increase typing speed and puts the arms in the most
effi cient position for reaching the keyboard.

v Sit up straight with the back placed at a 90° angle to the legs. Slouching and leaning forward in the chair
contributes to back and neck strain.
