• An Operating System (OS) is an interface between a computer user and computer hardware.
• The Operating system works as a language interpreter between the user and the hardware so that the two can interact with
each other.
• An operating system performs the following tasks in a computer system: memory management, processor management, device
management, file management, security, system performance audit, and error detection and reporting.
• An operating system can be any one or more of the following types: Single-user, Multi-user, Character User interface, Graphical
User Interface, Multitasking, Batch, Time-sharing, Real-time, Distributed, Network, or Mobile operating system.
• Some popular operating systems are: Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
• A Graphical User Interface (GUI) includes graphical elements such as windows, icons, and buttons.
• We need secondary storage devices such as hard disk and pen drives to save our work.
• A file system facilitates efficient use of storage devices, lets a user manage files and folders, and supports sharing of files among
users and applications.
• The primary name of a file identifies two different files of same type. The extension of the file identifies the type of the file, and
the program that can use it.
• Each file type describes the type of data that can be stored in it and also provides for mechanisms to access the data stored in it.
• A file is a collection of data or information.
• A folder is a place to store files or other folders.
• To create a duplicate copy of a folder or file in some other folder, use Copy and Paste commands.
• To move a folder or file to some other folder, use Cut and Paste commands.
• The file or folder we delete moves to the Recycle Bin.
• We can restore the deleted file back to its original location.
• The physical maintenance of a computer is oriented more towards keeping the computer system clean and free of dirt and dust.
• Memory cleaner or memory optimiser software clears the background processes and makes it available for required programs.
• Disk Defragmenter utility optimises the disk space by keeping all segments of files together at one place on the disk.
• Compression utility such as WinZip or WinRar compresses large files into smaller sizes.
• Regular backups help keep data safe and free the storage space from the hard disk.
• The major types of malware are Virus, Trojan, Worm, Spyware, and Adware.
• Antivirus software helps detect and remove malware from the computer.
• It is important to schedule maintenance tasks at regular time-periods.
