Preparing a Maintenance Schedule
Maintenance of a computer is not a task to be undertaken only once. A computer requires regular care and
maintenance to keep working at its full efficiency. Thus, it is important to schedule maintenance tasks at regular
time-periods.
Some maintenance tasks that should be performed regularly are:
v Cleaning of all peripheral devices such as keyboard, mouse, printer, and monitor.
v Replacing all broken devices.
v Replacing all faulty and broken connectors and wires.
v Cleaning and opening all vents on the computer and peripheral devices.
v Cleaning the work area where the computer and other devices are placed.
v Unistalling unwanted and obsolete programs from the computer.
v Taking regular backups of data stored in the computer onto an external device such as DVD, pen drive, or
external hard disk.
v Checking that previous backups are in working conditions.
v Running regular scans for malware and viruses using an antivirus software.
v Regularly updating the antivirus virus definitions.
v Installing updates for operating system and other software as and when they are made available.
v Periodically revising the firewall settings to ensure unauthorised access to the computer.
v Clearing of unwanted, duplicate, or obsolete files from the computer.
v Clearing the browser history and cookies from the computer.
v Running disk defragmenter utility to keep the hard disk at optimal performance level.
v Upgrading the hardware of the computer when it becomes necessary.
The maintenance schedule should be prepared with dates and timings and displayed at a place where it is
clearly visible. The Task Scheduler utility available in the System Tools under Accessories in Windows 10 should
be used to schedule various software maintenance tasks.
