Noun
A noun is a word used to name a person, place, animal, thing, and also something which can only be thought
of, but cannot be seen.
For example:
v Netaji was a great Indian leader. v The Earth revolves around the Sun.
v Allahabad is also known as Prayag. v He loves his freedom.
Pronoun
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. There are different kinds of pronouns. Just like nouns, pronouns
also have number and gender.
For example:
v I met Mother Teresa when she visited our school.
v Geeta, I had left my books here. Have you seen them?
v Prakash is an excellent athlete. He won the all-rounder trophy.
v This is a unique stone. We brought it all the way from China.
Verb
A verb is a word that expresses an action (walk, eat, sleep) or a state of being (is, am, are, was, were). It is the
most important part of speech as there can be no sentence without a verb.
For example:
v The farmer plucked the apples and placed them in a cart.
v Alaska is a cold place.
v When are you at home today?
v It was raining all night.
Verbs have three main forms.
Present (Ist form) Past (IInd form) Past Participle (IIIrd form)
All other parts of a verb are formed with the help of these three forms.
Adjective
An adjective is a word that describes a noun. There are different types of adjectives that tell us more about nouns.
For example:
v The kingfisher is a colourful bird. v This is an old fort.
v I have a warm coat. v Please show me the correct method to do it.
Adverb
An adverb is a word that adds something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
For example:
v She arranged the flowers quickly. v Laboriously, he climbed up the mountain.
v He painted the wall carefully. v
v They sang the song extremely well.
Conjunction
A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases, or sentences.
