Workplace accidents may include injuries that are caused to the workers due to falls, slips, and trips.
Slip and fall accidents may occur at any working environment and the injuries may vary from minor ache
to major accident. Some injuries suffered might include fracture, sprain, knee or elbow injury, wrist or head
injuries, etc.
Dealing with Accidents
Accidents must be handled carefully. An accident should be handled compassionately without assigning blame
on others.
v Every organisation must follow SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for accident handling.
v Safety measures must be placed to prevent workplace accidents.
v Immediately call the medical team in case of any injury.
v Stay alert.
v Pay attention to and follow emergency drills.
v Ensure that the injured individual receives first aid or medical assistance as soon as possible.
v Provide details regarding the likely cause of the accident and a description of the injury sustained to the
supervisor
v Assist supervisor to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Emergencies
Emergencies refer to any dangerous or serious situation, like an accident, that happens and needs immediate
action. An accident may lead to emergencies. There are number of emergencies that can occur in a workplace.
These emergencies can be man-made mistakes or natural. The various emergency conditions occurring in a
workplace can:
v threaten the employees, customers, or the public
v disrupt or shut down the operations
v cause physical or environmental damage
Some emergencies that require evacuation include:
v Explosion
v Slip down
v Equipment failure
v Extreme environmental conditions, including water logging, flooding, lightening, etc.
v Loss of power or water supply
v Fire
v Floods
v Earthquake
v Hurricane
v Tornado
v Toxic material release
v Civil disturbance
Dealing with Emergencies
Injuries can be the result of several different types of dangerous situations in a workplace. Accidents can be dealt
by developing an initial plan, calling for help, contacting the doctor, and updating emergency procedures.
