A workplace is responsible for ensuring that when an emergency occurs, the required procedures deal with the
situation. An emergency is an unplanned critical event that can cause serious injury, illness, death, and property
damage. One should never panic during emergencies, rather remain calm, check for any other danger, and call
emergency services like fire brigade or hospital, if required.

An emergency action plan should be developed to conduct hazard assessment which should include the
        following:

v Procedure for emergency evacuation and exit routes should be explained to all employees.
v A proper procedure should be accounted for all employees after evacuation.
v A procedure to be followed by employees when they perform rescue or any medical duties.
Some important points through which they can report fires or the emergencies are:

v The name and job title of every employee who can be contacted by employees about the plan or an explanation
of their duties under the plan.

v If there is an alarm, how they should respond to it.
v In case of fire, how employees can immediately evacuate to the predetermined area.
Some important points through which they can coordinate with an emergency services like medical and fire
departments and inform them when necessary are:
v Post emergency phone numbers on the notice board.

v Inform employees about accidents and ill health and develop the solutions for potential risks.
v Inform employees about restricted entry in the danger zone to avoid risk of harming others.

        Electrical Safety Rules

Electricity is widely recognised as a serious workplace hazard where employees can be exposed to electric
shock, burns, fires, and explosions. Burns suffered in electrical accidents can be serious and the risk of injury
from electricity is strongly linked to where and how it is used, and there is greater risk in wet and/or damp
        conditions.

v Use correct cable connectors and do not allow taped joints.
v Electrical installations should be checked regularly.
v Make sure that the socket outlets are not overloaded with the use of multiple adapters.

v Make sure fuses are correctly fitted.
v Users can help by reporting any damage or defects as soon as they find it out.
v Ensure that professionals are testing the electrical appliances and installation on regular basis.

        First Aid
In today’s time, accidents can happen anytime and anywhere, including home, on the road, park, or workplace.
So, it is important to have a first-aid kit to save lives when an accident occurs.
First aid is the first emergency care which is given to an injured person to
        minimise the injury.
v At workplace, a first-aid kit can be of any size or shape, but it should be
large enough to contain all necessary items and should contain the list
of contents for that kit. The kit should be made from such material that
it can protect the contents from dust, moisture, and contamination and
expiry of medicine should be checked on regular basis.

                                                                                                             147
