            Workplace Evacuation

Evacuation is the process of emptying a place in case of an emergency or a disaster.

            General Evacuation Procedures
When developing your emergency action plan, it’s a good idea to look at a wide variety of potential emergencies
that could occur in your workplace. It should be tailored to your worksite and include information about
all potential sources of emergencies. Developing an emergency action plan means you should do a hazard
assessment to determine what, if any, physical or chemical hazards in your workplaces could cause an emergency.
A disorganised evacuation can result in confusion, injury, and property damage. That is why when developing
your emergency action plan, it is important to determine the following:
v A proper first-aid kit should be maintained. In case of health injury, an immediate action can be taken.
v A proper smoke detector should be installed in order to avoid small fires turning uncontrollable.
v Avoid wearing ill-fitting or slippery footwear to the workplace.
Every company must ensure the following points for evacuation in case of any emergency:

v An evacuation policy must be drafted. All the team leaders are responsible for informing about the policy to
their employees about it. Proper attention must be paid when the team leader is informing you about these
details. Negligence at this time may cost lives.
v Organisations must have a designated assembly point for emergencies. Ensure that every employee/ worker
               must know where it is.
v All employees should follow all the safety practices.
v A risk assessment should examine the hazardous conditions at the workplace.
v A ‘buddy system’ for individuals with special needs or disabilities must be designated. This system ensures
that differently-abled are assisted and guided out of the premises or the impacted area properly. If you are a
buddy to someone, ensure that your buddy is safe at the assembly point with you.
v Floor plans with evacuation routes in work areas. Ensure that you understand these so you can use it in time
               of need.
v Assembly areas, where you are required to assemble after evacuation, must be properly taken care of.
v Periodic evacuation drills should be conducted. Ensure that you pay attention during these drills. You need
to save your life and you can be helpful in saving someone else’s life, too.
