Listening & Speaking Time
The teacher will call the students in groups of four to the front of the class. The
students of the group will frame a sentence which has a principal clause and a
subordinate clause (noun, adjective or adverb). One student will speak out the sentence
loudly. The second student will specify which part of it is principal clause and which
a subordinate. The third student will specify which variety of clause has been used
Clauses For example:
in the sentence. The fourth student will sum up the versions of all his/her partners.
Student A: The match will start when the rain stops.
Student B: ‘The match will start’ is the principal clause and ‘when the rain stops’ is
the subordinate clause.
Student C: As the subordinate clause modifies the verb, “will start, in this sentence, it
is an adverb clause.
Student D: We have done the analysis of the sentence. It has one principal clause and
one subordinate clause which is an adverb clause.
