The most common time references used to depict the past time are: yesterday, a week ago, last
month/night/year, the day before yesterday, etc. These words are placed either at the beginning or
at the end of a sentence, but never in the middle.
Formation of Sentences in Simple Past Tense
The negative in simple past is formed by using did not + main verb. Did not may be
contracted to didn’t. For example:
She did not walk down the hill today.

The interrogative (yes/no question) in simple past is formed by beginning the question
with did + subject + main verb. For example:
Did they stop at the post office yesterday?

The wh-question in simple past is formed with a wh-word + did + subject + main verb. The
words commonly used to form wh-questions are what, where, when, why, how, how many
and how much. For example:
When did he decide to come?
