Usually, a sentence is divided into two main parts.


                      Subject                                          Predicate


        Subject

        The first part of a sentence is generally called the subject. It describes the person or

        thing that performs an action.


        Predicate

        The second part of a sentence is generally called the predicate. It describes the subject

        or the action performed by the subject.

        Read the following sentences.

            Anil            saw a blind man on the road.
        O
            Subject                     Predicate

            The young man                    is washing his clothes.
        O
                Subject                              Predicate

            The Taj Mahal            is a beautiful monument.
        O
                Subject                       Predicate
        In a sentence, the predicate is further divided in two parts.


                    Verb                               Object


        Read the following sentence.

            The boys            play  cricket.
        O
             Subject           Verb  Object

                                  Predicate

        Sometimes, a predicate has two objects.

        Read the following sentence.

            She              gave         me        a book.                                                       The Sentence
        O
          Subject            Verb      Object 1  Object 2

                                      Predicate

        In the above sentence, there are two objects.

        Object 1 is a person. It is called an indirect object.

        Object 2 is a thing. It is called a direct object.
