Subordinating Conjunctions
The conjunctions that join dependent (subordinate) clauses to independent (main) clauses are
called the subordinating conjunctions. A subordinating conjunction connects the main idea to a
place, time or relationship, depicted in the dependent clause.
Read the sentences given below.
l I have not seen him since we mov ed into this city.
I took my umbrella because it was raining.

Coordinating Conjunctions
The conjunctions that connect phrases, words and clauses which are of equal importance are
called the coordinating conjunctions.

l I want to go to bed, so I am brushing my teeth.
l My friend likes to go mountain-climbing and swim in the ocean.

Correlative Conjunctions
The conjunctions that work in pairs to join phrases or words which are of equal importance in a
sentence are called the correlative conjunctions.

l She is both intelligent and beautiful. l Jerry is neither rich nor famous.
Here is a list of some commonly used correlative conjunctions.
