Simple Past Tense
We use the simple past tense to describe an action that happened in the past. In the simple past tense,
the verb does not change with the subject. The simple past is usually formed by adding -d, -ed or -ied
to the main form of a verb. However, irregular verbs take on different forms in the past tense.
l I played in the park. (I am not playing Now.)
l The Mughals attacked India in the 16th century. (The attack happened and stopped.)
Remember
The most common time references used to depict the past time are: yesterday, a week ago, last
month/night/year, the day before yesterday, etc. These words are placed either at the beginning or
at the end of a sentence, but never in the middle.
Formation of Sentences in Simple Past Tense
The negative in simple past is formed by using did not + main verb. Did not may be contracted to didn’t.
l She did not walk down the hill today.
The interrogative (yes/no question) in simple past is formed by beginning the question with did +
subject + main verb.
