Quotation Marks (“ ”)
The quotation marks are used:
to write down the exact words of a speaker.
Read the sentence given below.
l Father said, “Don’t forget to post the letter on the way.”
to mark out idiomatic or unfamiliar expressions like a foreign word.

l The western world has realised the importance of the ‘‘Vedas’’.
Apostrophe (’)
The apostrophe is used to show both contraction and possession.
For contractions, the apostrophe is used where a noun or a pronoun and a verb combine. It
often replaces a letter that has been dropped.
l is not — isn’t; was not — wasn’t; has not — hasn’t;
For possession, the ’s is added to a noun.
l Julie’s cycle; the cat’s tail; the car’s bonnet
Hyphen (-) and Dash (—)
The hyphen and the dash can be quite confusing.
A hyphen joins two or more words together. It is not separated by a space.
l run-off; son-in-law; go-between
It may be used like brackets to give additional, but essential information.
l My friend — the one who works in the navy — is getting married next year.
Dashes can be used to create emphasis in a sentence.
l You can trust him as you know him very well — I don’t.
l They might still turn up — it is quite possible.
