Question Mark (?)

          The question mark is used at the end of questions, i.e., interrogative sentences.

          Read the sentences given below.

               l   Where do you live?                         l   Are you from Spain?

           Remember
           A question mark is never used in reported speech.

           Read the sentences given below.
              She asked me if I wanted to go on the giant wheel.

              He asked if I could speak German.

          Colon (:)

          The colon expands or elaborates sentence that precedes it.
          The colon is used:

            to introduce a list.

          Read the sentence given below.

               l   I want the following items: butter, sugar and flour.
            to take the place of a comma before a quotation or a direct speech.

          Read the sentences given below.

               l   They shouted: ‘Our families are starving! We need land.’

               l   She said: ‘‘I think you called me.’’
            to separate the hour from minutes.

          Read the sentence given below.

               l   I will reach there by 8:30 a.m.

          Semicolon (;)
          The semicolon is used somewhere between a full stop and a comma.

            Semicolons may be used to link two phrases or sentences without the use of a conjunction.

          Read the sentence given below.
               l   I like Goa; it is beautiful and peaceful.

            Semicolons are also used to separate lists which already contain a list of things separated by
               commas.
          Read the sentence given below.

               l   This morning I bought some bread, butter and cheese; tomatoes, cucumbers and brinjals;
                  cakes, muffins and pastries.
