Kinds of Adverbs
Adverbs of Time
An adverb of time is the adverb that indicates the time of the action or happening denoted by the
verb.
1. He will write a letter shortly.
2. We shall go to the market today.
The words shortly and today are adverbs of time because each of them indicates the time of the
action denoted by the verb.
Adverbs of Place
An adverb of place is the adverb that points to the place or direction of an action.
1. Come in.
2. A flower pot is lying there.
The words in and there qualify verbs. So they are adverbs. But each of them denotes a place or
direction. So it is an adverb of place.
Adverbs of Manner
An adverb of manner is the adverb that denotes the manner of doing an action.
1. The storm passed off quickly.
2. She has done her duty well.
The words quickly and well qualify verbs. So they are adverbs. Each of them denotes the manner
of doing the action expressed by the verb. So it is an adverb of manner.
Adverbs of Degree
An adverb of degree is the adverb that points to the degree of a quality, etc. indicated by an
adjective or adverb.
1. The temperature is fairly high.
2. It is too much on your part, friend.
The words fairly and too qualify adjectives or adverbs. So they are adverbs. Each of them denotes
the degree of a quality, etc. So it is an adverb of degree.
Adverbs of Frequency
An adverb of frequency is the adverb th at mentions the frequency of an action.
1. I take coffee only once a day.
2. We must always speak the truth.
The words once and always qualify verbs. So they are adverbs. Each of them denotes the frequency
of an action. So it is an adverb of frequency.
