(C) ANALYSIS OF CATIONS
The sequence of various steps involved in the systematic analysis of basic radicals is as follows:
(i) Preparation of original solution (O.S.).
(ii) Separation of basic radicals into various groups.
(iii) Analysis of group precipitate for its cations.
(iv) Confi rmation of suspected cations.
Preparations of Original Solution (O.S.)
Take little salt in a test tube and treat with the following solvents one after the another. In case, the salt does
not dissolve in that particular solvent even on heating, another solvent in the following order must be used:
(a) Distilled water (cold or hot)
(b) Dil. HCl (cold or hot)
(c) Conc. HCl (cold or hot)
(d) Dilute HNO (cold or hot)
