Example 4: What fraction of 1 litre is 250 mL?
Solution: 1 litre = 1000 mL

Example 5: Write the natural numbers from 1 to 15. What fraction of them are:
(a) Prime numbers (b) Even numbers
Natural numbers from 1 to 15 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 i.e., 15 in number.
Solution: (a) Prime numbers from 1 to 15 are: (b) Even numbers from 1 to 15 are:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, i.e., 6 in number 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 i.e., 7

Example 6: There are eleven fish in an aquarium. Five of them are gold fish. What fraction of the fish are
gold fish?
Solution: Total number of fish = 11

Example 7: McDonalds sells milkshakes in two sizes. A small cup contains 300 mL and a large cup contains
2 more than the small cup. How much does a large cup of milkshake contain?

Solution: Quantity in small cup = 300 mL

Quantity in large cup = ( of 300 mL) + 300 mL

= 200 mL + 300 mL = 500 mL
Hence, the large cup contains 500 mL of milkshake.
Example 8: A bag contains 4 red, 3 black and 8 white balls. Find the fraction of:
(a) red balls (b) black balls (c) red and white balls
Solution: Total no. of balls = 4 + 3 + 8 = 15
