Let the 5 friends be A, B, C, D and E.
A B C D E
Give one orange to each friend first. We are left with 10 oranges. Now, we distribute one
more orange to each. We are left with 5 oranges. Now, we distribute one more orange to
each of them. We are left with no oranges. We can see that each of them gets 3 oranges.
So, if we distribute 15 oranges equally among 5 friends, each of them gets 3 oranges. We
can write this as a division fact, as shown below:
Thus, Dividend is the number to be divided. 15 ÷ 5 = 3
Divisor is the number by which we divide.
Quotient is the answer obtained on division. Dividend Divisor Quotient
Division as Repeated Subtraction Fact-o-meter
Division is also done using the concept of subtraction. To show division as repeated
Let us divide 12 by 2. subtraction, subtract until we
get 0 finally.
Step 1: Subtract 2 from 12; 12 – 2 = 10 Step 2: Subtract 2 from 10; 10 – 2 = 8
Step 3: Subtract 2 from 8; 8 – 2 = 6 Step 4: Subtract 2 from 6; 6 – 2 = 4
Step 5: Subtract 2 from 4; 4 – 2 = 2 Step 6: Subtract 2 from 2; 2 – 2 = 0
We subtract 2 from 12 six times to get 0.
Thus, 12 ÷ 2 = 6.
Division on a Number Line
We can divide on number line also. To divide 20 by 5 on a number line, start from 20.
Take jumps of 5 in backward direction, to reach 0. Count the jumps and get the answer.
