Adding 10, 100 and 1000

Adding 10

Let us add 426 and 10 Step 2: Add 2 tens and 1 ten.

Step 1: Identify the tens in 4 2 6. Write 3 in the tens place keeping other

It is 2 tens. digits same.
So, 4 2 6 + 1 0 = 4 3 6
Adding 100

Let us add 2436 and 100 Step 2: Add 4 hundreds and 1 hundred.

Step 1: Identify the hundreds in Write 5 in the hundreds place keeping

2 4 3 6. It is 4 hundreds. other digits same.

So, 2 4 3 6 + 1 0 0 = 2 5 3 6

Adding 1000

Let us add 6342 and 1000 Step 2: Add 6 thousands and 1 thousand.

Step 1: Identify the thousands in Write 7 in the thousands place keeping
6 3 4 2. It is 6 thousands. other digits same.

So, 6 3 4 2 + 1 0 0 0 = 7 3 4 2

Multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 can also be added in the same way.

Estimating the Sum

To quickly check the sum, we round off the numbers and add them. It can give us a

rough estimate whether our answer is correct or not.
