Addition and Subtraction of Decimals
We can add or subtract decimals in the same way as we do in case of numbers.
To add decimal numbers, we follow these steps:
Step 1: Convert the given decimals into like decimals if they are unlike.
Step 2: Write the addends one below the other so that the decimal points are in same column.
Step 3: Now, add the decimal numbers just as ordinary numbers and put the decimal point
in the sum. Fact-o-meter
Now, let us add 36.79 and 123.05 following the above steps. Conversion of unlike
1 decimals into like decimals
3 6 . 7 9 makes the addition or
+ 1 2 3 . 0 5 subtraction easier.
1 5 9 . 8 4
To subtract decimal numbers, we follow these steps:
Step 1: Convert the given decimals into like decimals if they are unlike.
Step 2: Write the greater number on top and smaller one below, so that the decimal points
are in same column.
Step 3: Subtract the decimal numbers just as ordinary numbers and put the decimal point
in the difference.
Now, let us subtract 0.508 from 93.5 following the above steps.
2 14 9 10
9 3 . 5 0 0 (93.5 → 93.500)
– 0 . 5 0 8
9 2 . 9 9 2
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Add 3.04, 12.5, 3.687 and 124.95.
Solution: Converting the given numbers into like decimals, we get as:
3.04 → 3.040; 12.5 → 12.500;
3.687; 124.95 → 124.950
