Fact-o-meter
When decimals are divided by 10, 100 1000, the value of each division will become smaller by the
number of zeroes in the divisor.
22.75 ÷ 10 = 2.275 (The decimal point has been shifted 1 place to the left.)
374.75 ÷ 100 = 3.7475 (The decimal point has been shifted 2 places to the left.)
623.25 ÷ 1000 = 0.62325 (The decimal point has been shifted 3 places to the left.)
23.25 ÷ 1000 = 023.25 ÷ 1000
= 0.02325 (An extra zero is placed to complete the extra places.)
Division of a Decimal by another Decimal
To divide a decimal by another decimal we follow these steps:
Step 1: Convert the divisor into an ordinary number by multiplying the dividend and the
divisor by 10 or 100 or 1000, etc. depending upon the number of decimal places.
Step 2: Divide the new dividend by that number.
Let’s learn through examples.
Let’s Attempt
0 .0 3 4
Example 1: Divide 0.0714 by 2.1. 21 0 .7 1 4
Solution: Converting the divisor into an ordinary number – 0
7 1
0 0714 10. × 0 714. – 6 3
= = 0.034
21 10. × 21 8 4
– 8 4
Quotient = 0.034 ×
