Division of Decimals
Division of Decimals by a Whole Number
To divide a decimal by a number, we follow these steps:
Step 1: Perform the division by considering the dividend as an ordinary number.
Step 2: When the division of the number part of the dividend is complete, put the decimal
point in the quotient and proceed with the division as in the case of ordinary
numbers.
Let us learn through examples.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Divide 3.45 by 25. Example 2: Divide 49.76 ÷ 16.
Solution: 345 ÷ 25 Solution: 4976 ÷ 16
1 3 .8 3 1 1
25 3 4 5 .0 16 4 9 7 6
– 2 5 – 4 8
9 5 1 7
– 7 5 – 1 6
2 0 0 1 6
– 2 0 0 – 1 6
× ×
345 ÷ 25 = 13.8 4976 ÷ 16 = 311
Thus, 3.45 ÷ 25 = 0.138 Thus, 49.76 ÷ 16 = 3.11
