Equivalent Decimals
Decimals that show the same amount are called equivalent decimals.
As can be seen, these two pictures show
the same amount, so 0.7 = 0.70
7 tenths = 70 hundredths.
7 = 70
10 100
7 tenths = 0.7 70 hundredths = 0.70
Thus, 0.7 = 0.70 = 0.700 = 0.7000.
This shows that, writing zeros at the right-hand end of a decimal number does not change its
value. 1.8 = 1.80 = 1.800; 45.21 = 45.210 = 45.2100, etc.
Like and Unlike Decimals
Like Decimals Unlike Decimals
The decimals having the same number of The decimals having different number of
decimal places are called like decimals. decimal places are known as the unlike
For example, 22.256, 17.306, 191.135 and decimals. For example, 36.35, 95.5, 18.347
1234.567 have three places of decimals. So, and 619.3 are unlike decimals.
they are like decimals.
Conversion of Unlike Decimals into Like Decimals
Look for the maximum number of decimal places and make each decimal alike by putting
appropriate number of zeroes on the right side. For example, to convert 6.389, 11.35 and 117.4
into like decimals, we need to add 1 zero in 11.35 and 2 zeroes in 117.4.
Hence, 6.389, 11.350 and 117.400 are like decimals.
Comparison of Decimals
To compare the given decimal fractions, we need to follow the simple steps as explained below:
Step 1: Compare the whole number parts. The decimal with greater whole number part is
greater.
