Use of Decimal in the Units of Length, Mass, Capacity and Money
Length: As we know,
1
1 m = 100 cm 1 cm = m = 0.01 m
100
32
i.e., we may write 6 m 32 cm as 6 m + m = 6.32 m.
100
1
Also 1 cm = 10 mm 1 mm = cm
10
or 30 mm = 3 cm
1
Now, 1 km = 1000 m 1 m = km
1000
10 25
10 m = km = 0.01 km; 25 m = km = 0.025 km
1000 1000
Mass: We know,
1
1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = kg = 0.001 kg
1000
2 15
So, 2 g = kg = 0.002 kg; 15 g = kg = 0.015 kg
1000 1000
Capacity: We know,
1 L = 1000 mL 1 mL = 1 L = 0.001 L
1000
8 895
So, 8 mL = L = 0.008 L; 895 mL = L = 0.895 L
1000 1000
Money: We know,
1
1 ` = 100 paise 1 p = ` = ` 0.01
100
6 65
So, 6 p = ` = ` 0.06; ` 6 and 65 p = ` 6 + = ` (6 + 0.65) = ` 6.65

Exercise 6.3
1. Write each of the following using decimals.
(a) 16 m 30 cm (b) ` 16 and 50 paise (c) 80 L 150 ml
(d) 7 km 55 m (e) 19 kg 65 g (f) 8 cm 9 mm
