Word Problems
Whenever you are encountered with a situation where one is given and many are required to
be ascertained it certainly involves the use of multiplication.
Let’s Attempt
Example: There are 656 pages in a encyclopedia. Find the number of pages in 186 such
encyclopedia.
Solution: 6 5 6
× 1 8 6 (100 + 80 + 6)
3 9 3 6 (656 × 6) So, there will be 122016
5 2 4 8 0 (656 × 80) pages in 186 encyclopedia
+ 6 5 6 0 0 (656 × 100)
1 2 2 0 1 6
Exercise 3.5
1. A furniture merchant bought 3728 tables for his showroom. If he paid ` 325 for each table,
what total amount was paid by the furniture merchant for buying the tables?
2. There are 2278 schools in a state. If average number of students in a school is 1250, find the
total number of students studying in the schools of the state.
3. Find the product of the largest 4-digits number and the largest 3-digits number.
4. A factory has 375 employees. Each employee is paid ` 3750 as monthly salary. What total

amount of money did the owner get after selling the bikes manufactured during the week?
Division
“Division is an inverse process of multiplication”.
We have learnt division of a 4-digit number by 2-digit number in previous class. Let us learn
how to divide large numbers by a 2-digit or a 3-digit number.
