hours minutes
8 4
7 6 5
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Sonu slept at 9:45 p.m. and woke up at 6:40 a.m. For how long did Sonu sleep?
Solution: Duration from 9:45 p.m. to midnight = 2 h 15 min h min
Duration from midnight to 6:40 a.m. = 6 h 40 min 2 1 5
Total time = 8 h 55 min + 6 4 0
Hence, Sonu slept for 8 h 55 min. 8 5 5
Example 2: Rahul left for his school at 7:00 a.m. and came back home at 1:45 p.m. How long
did he stay outside his home? h min
Solution: Convert the given time into 24-hour clock time by adding 0 13
12:00 hours to the time given in p.m. 1 3 4 5
1:45 p.m. = 1345 hrs – 0 7 0 0
7:00 a.m. = 0700 hrs 0 6 4 5
To know his duration of stay we subtract Fact-o-meter
the above quantities. Take care of a.m. and p.m.
Rahul duration of stay outside his home during calculation.
= 1345 hrs – 0700 hrs To count number of days from
starting date to end date =
= 0645 hrs = 6 hrs 45 minutes (End date – Starting date) + 1
Rahul stayed 6 hr 45 min outside his home.
Example 3: The summer vacation starts from 11th of May and the school was reopen on
2nd July. For how many days school was closed.
Solution: Number of days school closed in May = (31 – 11) + 1 = 21 days
Number of days school closed in June = 30 days
Number of day school closed in July = 1 day
\ Total number of days school was closed = 21 + 30 + 1 = 52 days
