Numbers 11
3. Find the place values of all the 5s for each number.
(a) 15503 (b) 31550 (c) 295547 (d) 581562
Expanded form and Standard form
Expanded form means writing a number as sum of 5 1 2 6 8
the place values of its digits.
Let us consider a 5-digit number, say 51268. 8 × 1 = 8
6 × 10
= 60
Find place values of all its digits. 2 × 100 = 200
Write these place values as a sum using ‘+’ sign. 1 × 1000 = 1000
Thus, 51268 = 50000 + 1000 + 200 + 60 + 8 5 × 10000 = 50000
50000 + 1000 + 200 + 60 + 8 is the expanded form of 51268.
To get the standard form, add the place values together.
For example, 51268 is the standard form of 50000 + 1000 + 200 + 60 + 8.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Write 659824 in the expanded form.
Solution: 6 5 9 8 2 4
4 × 1 = 4
2 × 10 = 20
8 × 100 = 800
9 × 1000 = 9000
5 × 10000 = 50000
6 × 100000 = 600000
Thus, 659824 = 600000 + 50000 + 9000 + 800 + 20 + 4
600000 + 50000 + 9000 + 800 + 20 + 4 is the expanded form of 659824.
Example 2: Write the standard form for the following expansions.
(a) 60000 + 0 + 700 + 80 + 2
(b) 300000 + 50000 + 7000 + 300 + 20 + 5 Fact-o-meter
Solution: (a) 60000 + 0 + 700 + 80 + 2 = 60782 Place value and face
value of 0 is always 0,
(b) 300000 + 50000 + 7000 + 300 + 20 + 5 wherever it may be in
= 357325 the number.
