We know that 9999 is the largest 4-digit number. When we add 1 more to it , we get a 5-digit
number, that is, 10000. It is read as ten thousand. It is the smallest 5-digit number.

In the place value chart, the fifth place from right is called the ten- TTh Th H T O
        thousands place. 9 9 9 9
Hence, the 5-digit numbers start from 10000 and go up to 99999. + 1

In the place value chart, the seventh place from the right is
        called ten-lakhs.

        Reading the Numbers
For the convenience of reading and writing large numbers, we separate the digits of the number
        into groups called periods.

           Periods Lakhs Thousands Ones
Places Ten Lakhs Ten Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
                         lakhs thousands

          Symbols TL L TTh Th H T O

As we can see, first period (Ones) has three places—ones, tens
and hundreds. Second period (Thousands) has two places—
thousands and ten thousands. Third period (Lakhs) also has Fact-o-meter
two places—lakhs and ten lakhs. In fact, all periods except the We use commas to
ones period have 2 places only. separate the period.

While reading a number, digits in a period are read together.
