In clock A, the minute hand has moved 24 marks and the hour hand is between 4 and 5, so the
time is 4:24 or twenty-four minutes past four.

a.m. and p.m.
A day has 24 hours. It is divided into two 12-hour periods.
The first period is from 12 midnight to 12 noon. It is called ante meridiem, that is, before
midday and is written as a.m.
The second period is from 12 noon to 12 midnight. It is called post meridiem, that is, after
midday and is written as p.m.
For example, 10 o’clock in the morning is written as 10:00 a.m. whereas 10 o’clock at night is
written as 10:00 p.m.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Write the time using a.m. or p.m.
(a) 8:15 in the morning (b) 1:50 after midnight
Solution: (a) 8:15 a.m. (b) 1:50 a.m.
Example 2: What time will it be:
(a) 3 hours after 10 a.m. (b) 4 hours after 7 p.m.
Solution: (a) 3 hours after 10 a.m. is 1 p.m. (b) 4 hours after 7 p.m. is 11 p.m.
