Example 4: 2 m 35 cm of cloth is required for making 1 shirt. How much cloth is needed to
make 6 such shirts?
Solution: Length of the cloth required for 1 shirt m cm
= 2 m 35 cm 2 3
Length of cloth required for making 6 shirts × 2 3 5
6
= 2 m 35 cm × 6 = 14 m 10 cm 1 4 1 0
Thus, the cloth needed to make 6 shirts is 14 m 10 cm.
Example 5: Madhu has a 57 m long string. She cuts it in 4 equal pieces. What is the length of
each piece? 1 4 2 5
Solution: Length of the string = 57 m = 57 × 100 cm 4 5 7 0 0
= 5700 cm –4
Number of equal pieces to be made = 4 1 7
Length of each piece = (5700 cm ÷ 4) –1 6 0
1
= 1425 cm – 8
= 14 m 25 cm 2 0
Thus, length of each piece of string = 14 m 25 cm –2 0
