P. 105

Example 2: Divide 2 L 500 mL by 5.
Solution: 2 L 500 mL = (2 × 1000) mL + 500 mL 5 0 0
= 2000 mL + 500 mL = 2500 mL 5 2 5 0 0
– 2 5
2500 mL ÷ 5 = 500 mL 0 0
Thus, 2 L 500 mL ÷ 5 = 500 mL
Exercise 7.6
Divide the following as per instructions.
(a) 600 m by 12 (b) 5 m 20 cm by 5 (c) 12 m 48 cm by 12
(d) 121 m 55 cm by 11 (e) 10 kg 50 g by 5 (f) 6 kg by 4
(g) 12 L 600 mL by 4 (h) 10 L 500 mL by 20
Word Problems
In real life, we come across such problems that involve the calculation of some metric measures.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Sumi travels 29 km 60 m by bus and 44 km 850 m by car to reach her house. How
much distance is covered in total?
Solution: Distance travelled by bus = 29 km 60 m km m
Distance travelled by car = 44 km 850 m 1 1
Thus, total distance travelled 2 9 0 6 0
= 29 km 60 m + 44 km 850 m = 73 km 910 m + 4 4 8 5 0
7 3 9 1 0
Example 2: On a day at a juice shop 53 L 750 mL of juice was sold. If the juice seller sold 28 L
more on next day, how much juice was sold on the next day?
Solution: Juice sold on first day = 53 L 750 mL L mL
Juice sold on next day = 53 L 750 mL + 28 L 1
Thus, the juice seller sold 81 L 750 mL of juice on the 5 3 7 5 0
next day. + 2 8 0 0 0
8 1 7 5 0
Example 3: A tailor had 15 m of cloth. He used 2 m 50 cm and 2 m 45 m cm
cm to make two shirts. How much cloth is left now? 2 5 0
Solution: Total length of cloth = 15 m + 2 4 5
Length of cloth used in making two shirts m 4 9 cm 10 4 9 5
Length of cloth left = 15 m – 4 m 95 cm 1 5 0 0
= 10 m 5 cm – 4 9 5
Thus, 10 m 5 cm of cloth is left now. 1 0 0 5
