Communication
As discussed in the previous class, communication is the process of sending and receiving messages through
different means. More simply, communication is the creation and exchange of meaningful words that convey
the thoughts of one person to the other. All creatures on the earth have developed means in order to convey
their emotions and thoughts to one another. However, it is the ability of humans to use words and language to
transfer specific meanings that sets them apart from the other creatures.
So we can say, communication is the act of transferring information between two individuals or within a group
to reach a common understanding. Communication allows us to express our needs, wants and other feelings
effectively.
METHODS OF COMMUNICATION
Communication skills are needed to speak and write properly and clearly. Being able to communicate effectively
is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It enables us to pass information to other people, and to understand
what is said to us.
Verbal Communication
The verbal communication is a type of communication wherein the message is transmitted through the words.
Language plays a very important role in this type of communication.
The success of verbal communication depends not only on the speaking ability of an individual but also on
the listening skills. How effectively an individual listens to the subject matter decides the effectiveness of the
communication. The verbal communication is applicable in both the formal and informal kind of situations.
Verbal communication can be done in either oral or written form.
u Oral Communication: In this type of communication, the sender gives words to his feelings, thoughts, ideas
and opinions and expresses them in the form of speeches, discussions, presentations and conversations.
The effectiveness of this communication depends on the tone of the speaker, clarity of speech, volume and
the quality of words used in the communication. In the case of the verbal communication, the feedback
is immediate since there is simultaneous transmission and receipt of the message by the sender and the
receiver respectively.
u Written Communication: The written communication is the most common and effective mode of
business communication. In any organization, the electronic mails, memos, reports, documents, letters,
