u Proxemic is when a person is standing too close and entering your space. This study of personal space and
closeness is called proxemics. Every culture has different levels of physical closeness. We can use physical
space to communicate different non-verbal messages like signals of intimacy, affection, aggression or
dominance.
u Facial expressions show seven basic human emotions—anger, contempt, playfulness, disgust, fear,
happiness sadness and surprise. For example, a wink may show that you are being playful and not serious.
u Physiological changes are often associated with anxiety and discomfort. While communicating with others
if someone is sweating, blinking, shaking, flaring of nostrils, trembling chin, blanching, cold clammy skin,
blushing, moisture in eyes, flushing, swallowing, breathing heavily, etc., then all these are expressions of
physiological changes.
Advantages of Non-Verbal Communication
The advantages of non-verbal communication are as follows:
u Information can be easily presented using silent means.
u The message from non-verbal interaction is received by the recipient very fast and thus reduces the wastage
of valuable time.
Disadvantages of Non-Verbal Communication
The disadvantages of non-verbal communication are as follows:
u Lengthy discussion and necessary details are not possible.
u Since in this type of communication gesture, facial expression, eye contact, touch, etc. are used for
communication, so it might become difficult for some people to understand them correctly.
Visual Communication
Another important method of communication is visual communication which involves sending and understanding
messages only through images or pictures.
These are some of the reasons why most of the people prefer visual communication.
u Visuals can be used to communicate to a wide range of people with different backgrounds.
u Visuals are useful when trying to condense information into a short time period.
u People think in terms of images, not words, so visuals help them retain and recall technical information.
u Visuals attract and hold the attention of observers.
u Visuals simplify technical information.
u Visuals may be useful in presenting technical information to a non-technical audience.
u Graphs, charts, maps,
PowerPoint presentations,
overhead projectors,
smart-boards, white and
black boards, models,
paper handouts, etc., are
the different types of visual
aids that help in conveying
a message effectively.
