Light Pen

Just like mouse and joystick, this is also one of the pointing devices having the shape
of a pen. It is used by directly pointing on the monitor screen. It can sense the screen,
coordinates with the help of a sensor mounted on its tip and convert information into
digital signals which are processed by the CPU and responded by activating the option
selected or pointed by the pen. It is a very useful input device for artists.

Rahul is playing an online game on the computer. He wants to control the gaming objects on the
screen. Which input device would he use?

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Reader/Recognition)

This is a type of special scanner which can read the character printed with a special magnetic ink. The application
of this device is mainly found in the banking sector.

MICR Code MICR

Bank employees use this device to read and process the information printed at the bottom of the cheque like
bank code, account number in the form of a MICR code printed with magnetic ink. It reads the characters using
sensors and examining the shape of the character printed in a special purpose MICR font.

OCR (Optical Character Reader/Recognition)
A document scanned using a normal scanner is stored as an image and is not directly
editable. OCR is a type of scanner which scans the handwritten or printed text on paper
and converts it into the actual text which can be edited using a word processor. The
device is not very popular because its accuracy rate is 80% to 90% which means there
can be many errors on a page. A new technology device named Intelligent Character
Reader (ICR) is being developed which has higher rate of accuracy.

Digital Camera and Webcam
Digital camera is used to capture images digitally and to store it into the
memory of the camera which can be later transferred to the computer
with the help of data cable. Unlike the standard camera which uses fi lm to
record the light image, it has an array of light sensors to capture the image.
The biggest advantage of this device is that it has capacity to capture
hundreds of images on a single small memory chip. A Webcam can be
connected with the computer to do videoconferencing or online chatting. Digital Camera Web Camera
Some laptops have a webcam fi xed inside them.

QR Code

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a type of 2D bar code that is used to provide easy access
to information through a smartphone.
