Think of self-awareness as learning to dance in a group. For this, we have to synchronise the movements of
our feet, hands, and body. We also have to pay attention to what our partner is doing besides focusing on
music, beat, floor space, and other dancers. Just like when we acquaint with dance steps, we become more
graceful. Similarly, when we become more self-aware, we instinctively begin to see aspects of our personality
and behaviour that we didn’t notice before.
If we have an emotional reaction of anger or frustration, we notice many of the thoughts and small triggers that
build up towards those emotions. We also notice moments when we can change the interpretations in our mind,
or not believe what we are thinking. In this heightened awareness we instinctively make better choices in our
thought process long before an emotional reaction or destructive behaviour.
Making changes in our behaviour is much easier to do when we catch them early in the dynamic, before the
momentum of thought and emotion has gathered steam. The changes in our mind and behaviour become
simple and easy when we develop self-awareness.
Types of Self-Awareness
Developing self-awareness can help in recognising when we are under stress. There are four types of self-
awareness:
Self-awareness of Strengths
You should be aware of your own strengths. Discover them by paying attention to the work at hand and how well
you are able to perform. This will give you an idea of your strengths and what kind of projects you should do.
Self-awareness of Weaknesses
As you already know, you cannot do everything. Discovering your weaknesses helps you to look for support
from others. It builds humility and makes you a humble person instead of being an egoist.
Self-awareness of Flaws
We all have flaws and we need to be aware of them. Do not hide them and suffer. Instead, accept them and try
to overcome them with the help of family and friends.

SWOT Analysis is a strong tool, but it involves a great subjective element. It is
best when used as a guide, and not as a prescription.
It builds our strengths.
Reverses our weaknesses.
Maximises our response to opportunities.
Helps us to overcome threats that jeopardise the chances of our success.
