Discipline
It is the most important skill to keep you on track for the successful completion of work at hand. You should be
able to tell yourself when it is time to work, to actually sit behind your desk, and to really start working.
Communication Skills
Good communication skills help you to convey your opinions to others with clarity. Many people choose to
work independently because they know that they can communicate tactically. An honest and tactful opinion
will help you in getting work done easily.
Negotiating Skills
Those with negotiating skills have the foresight and willingness to accommodate other people and their ideas
for the benefit of their businesses. Most people choose to work independently in order to be able to set their high
standards. But compromising is a very important aspect if you want to keep clients satisfied with your work and
services.
Flexibility
There is no project that starts and ends exactly on time. Some clients cancel projects or they change their priorities
and demands. Always be flexible about it. One fun part of working independently is having a variety of projects
and plans. As you know, it is also a part of the challenge.
Adaptability
It is the quality to adapt your working style to suit the working style of other people who are working with you.
This should be done without compromising with the quality of work.
Open-mindedness
It is the ability to deal with rejection and not to take it personally. This skill requires a fearless, never-say-die
attitude, and open mindedness to face failures, yet not get disheartened and start afresh. Sometimes you have to
contact some potential clients more than three to five times before they sign a contract. Some of them reject your
proposal with no obvious reason. Learn to deal with rejections and do not take them personally. Remember,
there are lots of other clients who want to work with you.
Self-awareness
Our lives revolve around us and there is always something happening in life. We are what we believe we are.
Self-awareness helps in knowing ourselves better. Self-awareness is to have a clear perception of our personality.
It is to be conscious of our strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self-awareness
allows us to understand other people, how they perceive us, our attitude, and our responses towards them.
Relative Scale
We might quickly assume that we are self-aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for awareness. If
we have ever been in a tricky situation, we may have experienced everything happening in slow motion and
noticing details of our thought process and the event. This is a state of heightened awareness. With practice
we can learn to engage these types of heightened states and see new opportunities for interpretations in our
thoughts, emotions, and conversations.
Developing Self-awareness
Self-awareness is developed through practice in focusing our attention on the details of our personality and
behaviour. It cannot be learned from reading a book. When we read a book, we are focusing our attention on the
conceptual ideas in the book. With our attention in a book, we are practicing not paying attention to our own
behaviour, emotions, and personality.
