Let’s Learn Reporting Requests and Commands

Use the words such as ordered, advised, requested, warned, prohibited to report requests

and commands. For example:
1. He said to me, “Please teach me reported speech.” (direct speech)

He requested me to teach him reported speech. (indirect speech)

2. The teacher said to the boys, “Do not waste your time.” (direct speech)
The teacher advised the students not to waste their time. (indirect speech)

3. The manager said to the peon, “Get out.” (direct speech)
The manager ordered the peon to get out. (indirect speech)

Practice Time 4

Change the speech of these sentences from direct to indirect.

1. My friend said to me, “Wait.”
2. Harish said to his servant, “Go and get green vegetables.”

3. The teacher said to the students, “Work hard to get success.”

4. The government said, “Please follow the lockdown guidelines.”

Listening & Speaking Time

The teacher will conduct a pair activity for oral practice of various forms of narration.
He/She will write on the blackboard/smart board four situations of narration indicated
by its key terms: tense, pronoun, time and space. The teacher will give one of these Direct and Indirect Speech
key themes to the pair called for the activity. The teacher will ask one student to
speak out loudly a sentence of direct speech. He/she, then, ask the second one to speak
out a corresponding sentence in indirect speech. At times, he/she will also point out
that the direct speech is always written within inverted commas in writing.
For example:
The cue assigned  Tense
First student: I say, ``You are going to be the monitor of the class.’’
I said, ``You are going to be the monitor of the class.’’’’
I shall say, ``You are going to be the monitor of the class.’’’’
Second student: I say that you are going to be the monitor of the class.
I said that you were going to be the monitor of the class.
I shall say that you are going to be the monitor of the class.
