Adverbs of Degree
Adverbs of degree are used to depict the intensity of an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.
They are usually placed before the word they modify and give a very specific picture of the
action.
The team has almost arrived. (almost tells us that the team has nearly arrived)

The soup was terribly hot. (terribly tells us that the soup was hot to a great degree)

Here are some commonly used adverbs of degree.
absolutely enormously hardly somewhat
barely extremely incredibly entirely
completely fairly practically thoroughly
deeply fully decidedly virtually
enough greatly scarcely highly
Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of frequency describe how often something occurs. It may do so in definite (weekly,
daily, yearly) or indefinite (sometimes, often, rarely) terms.
An adverb of frequency is used:
� to tell us how often something happens. For example:
They usually go for a walk after dinner.
O
� with simple present tense to indicate routine or repeated activities. For example:
The tower bells chime hourly.
O
� after a subject, but before a verb. For example:
Ketan always takes the bus.
O
� in forming a negative or a question; it is placed before the main verb. For example:
Do they normally talk so loudly?

annually monthly generally rarely

eventually nightly occasionally then

Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner tell us about the way in which something happens or is done. For
example:
The children were laughing happily. He was driving dangerously.
