The object of the transitive verb may be a noun, a phrase or a pronoun that is talking about
the person or the thing related to the verb. For example:

Hema loves ice cream. I water the plants every day.
                    l l
They charged a high rate of interest.
                    l
Transitive verbs may be used with a direct object and with an indirect object. For example:

                      I gave a penny. I gave him a penny.
                    l l
Both the sentences above make complete sense. While him is an indirect object, a penny
                    is a direct object.

Some transitive verbs can be used with a direct object and an indirect object. For example:
Tina gave her a bunch of flowers. (The action is gave.)
                    l
The direct object answers the question What? — Ans: a bunch of flowers.

The indirect object answers the question Whom? — Ans: her.

Generally, a direct object refers to a thing and an indirect object refers to a person.

Intransitive verbs do not need an object to complete their meaning. For example:

                      The students are writing.
                    l
                      We all are walking.
                    l
                      Dr Suman is talking.
                    l
