Listening & Speaking Time
The teacher will help the students to have a correct sense and understanding of the
usage of since and for by organising effective listening and speaking activities. He/
she will explain that the word since indicates a particular point of time, whereas the
word for indicates a period of time. In both kinds of usages, however, a sense of the
same period is obtained. The teacher will ask particular questions which will give the
students the opportunity to use since and for in sentences and develop a sense of
distinction between the meanings of the two. Example:
Teacher: Tell me some facts about your joining this school using since and
for.
Student’’’'s reply: I have been in this school since January. I have been in this school
for the last 10 years.
The teacher will repeat this activity with other students by asking them questions
about other events of their lives, such as birthday, match played by them, their last
examination, their last visit to a hill station, etc.
