Read the given sentences. Write D if they are declarative sentences, I if they are
interrogative sentences, IM if they are imperative sentences, and EX if they are
exclamatory sentences.
1. The India Gate is in Delhi. __________________

We have already read about the sentence. A sentence is a group of words placed in a
proper order to express a complete thought.
There are four types of sentences: declarative sentence, interrogative sentence,
imperative sentence, and exclamatory sentence.
Declarative Sentence
A declarative sentence is a sentence which states a fact, a happening or an action.
1. My father is a doctor. (fact)
2. The earth is not flat in shape. (fact)
3. The cook prepared a sweet dish. (action)
4. A famine has occurred in our state. (happening)
Observe the above sentences and note the following.
A declarative sentence can be a positive or negative sentence.

A declarative sentence never asks a question.
O
A declarative sentence has a full stop (.) at the end.
O
A declarative sentence does not state a wish either.
O
A declarative sentence is also called an assertive sentence.
